So me and the kids were watching “The Iron Giant” today (good movie) and the scene came up with the “Duck & Cover” video part – and that got me to thinking about all the awesome propaganda posters I had seen lately. So today we have rounded up some of the best Vintage and Modern War Propaganda posters we could find!
I find history completely fascinating – but the propaganda really shows you the dark side of people, and the governments, influencing people via use of designs & poster printing to do what they want with catchy slogans and banners. These posters kind of creep me out for some reason, but at the same time the design is fantastic, and the reality is somewhat skewed – it reminds me of all of the “fallout” games and movies of post-apocalyptic nuclear holocaust lands – I think those movies kind of warped my view of these propaganda things.
Anyway – its all good fun & inspiration now to look back on our world history and how scared we were (and still are) of wars and nuclear weapons. Hopefully we can all look at a brighter future where we don’t need wars or their propaganda :). Whatever you are working on I hope you enjoy these poster designs!
What Is Propaganda?
According to the wikipedia:
Propaganda is a form of communication that is aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position. Propaganda is usually repeated and dispersed over a wide variety of media in order to create the desired result in audience attitudes.
As opposed to impartially providing information, propaganda, in its most basic sense, presents information primarily to influence an audience. Propaganda often presents facts selectively (thus possibly lying by omission) to encourage a particular synthesis, or uses loaded messages to produce an emotional rather than rational response to the information presented. The desired result is a change of the attitude toward the subject in the target audience to further a political agenda. Propaganda can be used as a form of political warfare.
While the term propaganda has acquired a strongly negative connotation by association with its most manipulative and jingoistic examples, propaganda in its original sense was neutral, and could refer to uses that were generally benign or innocuous, such as public health recommendations, signs encouraging citizens to participate in a census or election, or messages encouraging persons to report crimes to the police, among others.
Also according to the wiki – it originated around the World War I era – history is so fascinating!
Anyway – dig into these epic vintage design inspirations! Enjoy!
