A lot of people say that it doesn’t matter what degree you complete in college because they all lead somewhere. They can all put you on the definitive route towards a successful career. While this is true, it is also clear that some are far more relevant and useful in the modern world compared to others.
An extreme example would be Latin. It’s true, you can study Latin at university, and this skill is often related to prestige. But it’s not enough by itself. You can’t expect to claim a high job in an office, simply because you can speak Latin. In fact, if you’re going to study this language it should be a side course along with something else. Or, how about memes? Yes, there is now a course where you can study memes. What will you use this for? Well, you could create them and hope they go viral but again, your options here are very limited.
So, now that we’ve looked at some of the most useless studies for the future of your career let’s explore some of the best.
IT, Computing
The IT industry will have grown 25 percent by 2020. Now, right away that should tell you just how important this industry is going to be in the future, and it doesn’t take a genius to understand why. Studying IT is smart because eventually, it’s going to be one of the only industries left. We’re not just reliant on tech, we use it for everything, and it’s starting to take the jobs that were once reserved for manual labor. For instance, these days, you don’t need to hire an accountant. Instead, you can get a computer software that does all the work for you for a fraction of the cost.
This is why almost every university is now offering a degree in IT and computing. It could put you in a position where you’ll easily be able to find your footing on the market at a time where the jobs can be quite scarce.
Law
You might not think that Law has a diverse range of options when it comes to careers. The key seems to be in the name, but you don’t have to become a barrister, solicitor or attorney if you study law. If you don’t get fantastic grades, you can become a paralegal and build up some practical experience. Eventually, this could allow you to rise up the ranks. Those trained in law might also be headhunted for a position in politics. Or, with a master of law online course, you could be the perfect candidate for a position in the business, dealing with legal issues. This could be the head of HR or quite simply a specialist legal advisor. There really is a wealth of possibilities here.
Marketing
If you gain a degree in marketing, you don’t have to just become a marketer or sales specialist. You could find yourself in a PR position, liaising with the press and representing a company or organization. As with the other options on this list, you’ll have multiple paths to choose from once you leave college.
We hope you see now that not all degrees are equal and you should think carefully about choosing the right one.
