Some careers lock you down in one place and drain you of your sanity, but others give you the freedom to fly – literally! If you fancy a career change, and you also want to explore the world and travel more, then here are the jobs that let you do just that.
Cabin Crew
Can you get a more suitable travel-related career than being a cabin crew member? All airlines have jobs available at some point, and if you pick one that handles long-haul international flights, then you’ll be able to see the whole world. You’ll like this type of job if you’re comfortable flying for long periods and enjoy the company of other people.
It’s also a career without strict entry requirements. Anyone can apply for a cabin crew job – it’s more to do with how well you respond to training. You’ll need to undergo a few cabin crew simulator runs to see if you can handle the pressure, but if it all goes swimmingly, you’ll have a job that lets you travel everywhere.
Journalism
Various types of journalism give you the opportunity to travel. You could become a broadcast journalist who films nature documentaries, like David Attenborough. You could be a sports journalist who covers events in all kinds of different places. You can even argue that photography is a form of journalism, in which case you can travel the world taking nature photos, etc.
The thing with journalism is that it’s a very tough field to break into. You could start off as a freelancer and generate a portfolio of experience before looking for more long-term jobs with broadcasting agencies. Once you’re in, you’re in – but it is hard to get your foot in the door.
Event Production
There are all kinds of jobs in event production that will be suitable for people who want to travel as far and wide as the eye can see. You could be a producer for live events, a camera operator, a technician, an engineer, or even just part of the catering crew. The best type of events to target are concerts and festivals. If you manage to get a job for a production company that handles artists who tour the world, then it’s a match made in heaven.
Teaching
Countries all over the world need English-speaking teachers, and this makes the career a very positive one for people who wish to travel. You could make a country your home for a year or so and teach at a school while immersing yourself in the culture. The only downside is that this doesn’t offer a huge amount of flexibility. You normally have to commit to a job for a decent contract before leaving – it’s not like the other jobs where you’re unlikely to be in one place for more than a couple of months at best.
Are these the only careers that help you travel the world? No, but they’re a fantastic starting point. You can see that it’s completely possible to have a full-time job that doesn’t suck and still have the time to go places and see so many amazing countries – and that’s before you factor in all your time off!
